A relaxed Sunday

It is about 6:30pm and we are getting ready to cook dinner. We spent the morning on a car tour. We stopped at a vantage point for a photograph. The view is of the beginning of the Rock Islands. Tomorrow we are headed there for our first day of diving.

The second picture is of Danka's yard sale benefiting the Animal Shelter. She brought in $400.

Finally the Belvedere hotel. What is interesting about the picture, are the rooms across the bottom of the picture.

Only native Palauians can own businesses with out paying high fees and taxes. The majority of the workers come from the Philippines. They are treated much like indentured servants. They work 6 day weeks and by law (rarely enforced) must have a day off.

Their housing is included as part of their compensation. It is referred to as "barracks". Most are shacks or tin sheds and are not kept up except by the workers. The Belvedere provides the best barracks--the rooms across the bottom of the picture.
